On a cloudy Saturday afternoon, a crazy game took place between Cortland and Brockport. The Red Dragons came off their homecoming win against Hartwick, and the Golden Eagles came off a win against Utica. Brockport came into this game with an undefeated record of 4-0, and they kept that undefeated streak with a come from behind win against the Red Dragons. The Golden Eagles surged late, and ended up winning by a score of 52-38.
The Red Dragons got off to a fast start when they scored on their opening drive thanks to 15 yard pass from quarterback Steven Ferreira to wide receiver Nick Anderson. The Golden Eagles responded right back a few minutes later when running back Justin Morrison rushed for 40 yards, and tied the score to seven a piece.
With about two minutes left in the first, Cortland took the lead again when running back Zach Tripodi rushed for two yards giving the Red Dragons the lead again 14-7.
In the second, at 10:25 Ferreira connected to Anderson again with a seven yard pass which extended Cortland’s lead to 21-7. The Golden Eagles then responded quickly with a touchdown seconds after, then converted on a field goal with two minutes left in the quarter. With 45 seconds remaining in the half, Ferreira connected to wide receiver Angelo Foster on a 17 yard pass giving them a 28-17 lead.
In the third quarter, Brockport began to turn things around. The Golden Eagles quickly converted on a touchdown when quarterback Joe Germinerio rushed for five yards a few minutes in. This slimmed Cortland’s lead down to just 28-24. The Red Dragons only scored in the third on a 34 yard field goal by William Holscher with eight minutes left. This was the game changer because Brockport then took advantage by scoring another touchdown with three minutes left in the quarter. That ended up tying up the game 31-31.
In the fourth, the Golden Eagles showed everyone why they are undefeated. They took over the quarter and scored three touchdowns. Right from the beginning, Germinerio converted on a pass to Joseph Ortiz for five yards giving Brockport the lead 38-31. Cortland didn’t respond back right after, and then Brockport took advantage and scored on their next possession. The Golden Eagles ended their scoring surge with four minutes left when Germinerio rushed for three yards, which gave them a demanding 52-31 lead. The Red Dragons scored right after, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Brockport’s comeback. The Golden Eagles held on and won 52-38.
