Canada’s New Professional League

Canada is having a new league this year that would rival the MLS, USL and other leagues in the country. This new league, the Canadian Premier League, will function as how Mexico and other Central American Leagues, having two tournaments per year. Moreover, the league is not like the MLS since the league doesn’t own the individual teams rather, they are owned by other members. There are also talks of having promotion/relegation as well as adding USL side Ottawa Fury FC. There would be a separate tournament just for the one spot that the league has to the CONCACAF League which would be a triangular with the top team qualifying to the 2019 CONCACAF League. The teams are from all but two provinces and all territories. The seven inaugural teams are:

Province Team(s)
British Columbia Pacific FC (site: Westhills Stadium, Langford, British Columbia)
Alberta FC Edmonton (site: Clarke Stadium, Edmonton, Alberta)

Team will compete to qualify for the 2019 CONCACAF League

Cavalry FC (site: ATCO Field, Foothills County, Alberta)
Manitoba Valour FC (site: IG Field, Winnipeg, Manitoba)

Team will compete to qualify to the 2019 CONCACAF League

Ontario Forge FC (site: Tim Hortons Field, Hamilton, Ontario)

Team will compete to qualify to the 2019 CONCACAF League

York 9 FC (site: York Lions Stadium, Toronto, Ontario)
New Brunswick HFX Wanderers FC (site: Wanderers Ground, Halifax, New Bruswick)

In the case of Forge FC, FC Edmonton and Valour FC they were given a special status because they were the first teams to announce intent to join.

The two ways that this new league will have a representative in any CONCACAF tournament is by:

  • Winner of the playoff between the Spring Season Champion and the Fall Season Champion (if it proves to be the same team then it is the best second place team in either season). That team will be placed in the Preliminary Round of the CONCACAF League
  • Winning the Canadian Championship (will go to the Champions League)
  • Topping the qualification table only for the 2019 CONCACAF League

As of May 14th, 2019, the triangular for the 2019 CONCACAF League is like this

FC Edmonton 1 1 0 0 2 1 +1 3
Forge FC 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
