CONCACAF Champions League New Format

There is a change brewing in to the CONCACAF Champions League format.  In the old system the bids were organized as follows:

North America

Mexico: 4 (Champions of Apertura, Runner-up of Apertura, Champions of Clausura, and the Runner-up from Clausura)

United States/Canada: 4 (MLS Cup winners, Supporters Shield (best regular season record), The Conference Regular Season champions (from the conference that did not win the Supporters Shield), US Open Cup Champions)

Canada: Canadian Championship Champions

Central America

Costa Rica: 2* (Invierno and Verano champions)

Honduras: 2 (Apertura and Clausura Champions)

Guatemala: 2 (Apertura and Clausura Champions)

Panama: 2 (Apertura and Clausura Champions)

El Salvador: 2** (Apertura and Clausura Champions)

Nicaragua: 1 (Champion of either tournament with the best aggregate record between the two)

Belize: 1*,** (Champion of either tournament with the best aggregate record between the two)

*=Belize lost their bid and Costa Rica gained another in the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons because the Belizean representative (Belmopan Bandits) did not have a FIFA-approved stadium. Costa Rica was given an extra slot based on the record the previous seasons.

**=Belize lost their bid and El Salvador gained another bid in the 2012-2013 season due to the Belizean representative did not have a FIFA-approved stadium and El Salvador was picked because it was the only Central American nation to send a team into the Quarterfinals

Caribbean 

Only part of the region to not send teams based on the record from any country. Every nation in the sub-region plays in a qualifying tournament to go to the Champions League. There are only 3 spots available (Champion, Runner-up and Third Place)

NEW FORMAT

The newest format is that there are two rounds. In this format there is no group stage, but there is two phases. In Phase 1, the bids are as follows:

FIRST PHASE NATIONS:

Central America

Costa Rica:  2 (Best aggregate points and Second-best aggregate points)

Honduras: 2 (Runner-up of either tournament with the best aggregate record, either the Clausura or Apertura champion with the lowest aggregate record)

Guatemala: 2 (Runner-up with the best aggregate record, either the Clausura or Apertura champion with the lowest aggregate record)

Panama: 2 (Runner-up with the best aggregate record, either the Clausura or Apertura champion with the lowest aggregate record)

Belize: 1 (Champion with the best aggregate record)

Caribbean Cup: 3 (pre-CONCACAF Champions League tournament from every island nation and French Guyana which are part of the confederation, from this tournament, the Runner-up, Third Place and Fourth Place are at this phase)

SECOND PHASE

First Phase: The First Phase Champion from a Round Robin tournament

Canada/United States: 1 (Canadian Cup Champions)

Caribbean Cup: 1 (Champions)

Costa Rica: 1 (Best overall Champion by aggregate record)

Panama: 1 (Overall Champion)

Honduras: 1 (Overall Champion)

Guatemala: 1 (Overall Champion)

El Salvador: 1 (Overall Champion)

Mexico: 4 (Champions and Runner-up of both Apertura and Clausura)

US/Canada: 4 (MLS Champions, Supporters Shield, Best Record from the opposite conference of the Supporters Shield champions, US Open Cup)
