CONCACAF Champions League Semifinals

As the final Central American team fell on March 14th at Kansas City, the second to last round is set. There will be a Mexican team in the final as three of the last four are Liga MX teams. The teams that make up this round are Santos Laguna who will face off against Tigres UANL whereas Sporting KC will finish their series against Rayados of Monterrey.

Team Wins Ties Loses Goals Scored Goals Conceded +/- Points

Sporting Kansas City 3 0 1 9 2 7 9
Tigres 3 0 1 8 2 6 9
Monterrey 2 1 1 4 1 3 7

Scenarios to host the last leg of the Final:

  1. Win both games against Tigres

  3. Draw both games and win the series AND have Monterrey win the series (Riskiest scenario)

Sporting KC:

  1. Win both games AND Santos loses points in the series
  2. Win the series (Win+loss/tie) AND Santos loses at least one game and wins the series

Tigres UANL

Santos Laguna vs Tigres UANL

Normally I would be picking Tigres to win the series handily but the current tournament has shown that the team is not that consistent. Why is that? The first game they played they lost in Costa Rica to a team that hasn’t won against a Mexican side in about three years. When the draw happened to the time that they played it was a span of about two months to prepare. After that mishap, Tigres rebounded winning the last 3 games.

Santos however comes in as the most consistent team in the tournament winning every game by a large margin. The smallest margin of victory was when the team visited the NY Red Bulls and won by 2.  The other three games when they faced the aforementioned Red Bulls and Marathon the margin of victory was 3.6667 goals. The two games that boosts that margin is the series that the team played Marathon.

That being said there will not be a Clásico Regiomontano (Tigres-Monterrey) final

Winner: Santos Laguna by an aggregate margin of 3 goals

Sporting KC vs Monterrey CF

Sporting KC comes in as the higher seed in this matchup because of the first round. In that round they faced off Toluca and won both games then they went to Panama and lost by a small margin and when they came home and won 3-0 after one of the best performances that I’ve seen from a goalkeeper in the Panamanian side.

Monterrey comes in as the last seed and they went to the Cuzcatlan in San Salvador with the opportunity to get ahead and gain away goals because those are pretty important. They failed to do that. Then they hosted Alianza and barely moved on to the next round. Then Monterrey hosted Atlanta and they won 3-0, but then they went to Atlanta and lost 1-0.

Both teams defend well at home and they are not so well away. However because Monterrey drew with an entire two month window before going to El Salvador, Sporting KC will win the series.

Winner: Sporting KC with a two goal difference

PROJECTED FINAL: Santos Laguna (#1) vs Sporting KC (#2)
