Cortland Dance Company Competition

On February 24, SUNY Cortland hosted the Dance Company competition at Cortland High School. Buffalo State, SUNY Fredonia, and Keuka College all brought the heat to the competition. Adrenaline was running through every one of us that Saturday morning.

The weekend was also an excuse to have our friends and family come visit to watch what we have been practicing each week. Which also means going out to dinner and not eating at the dining halls.

What a treat.

Buffalo State mostly competed in the Hip Hop category and won first and second place for their routines. The energy they had on stage captured the audience and the choreography was sharp. Cortland placed third for our Hip Hop number called “Kung Fu Kenny”. We all did a great job, but now we know that we have to bring the energy like Buffalo State did for future competitions.

Keuka College only competed with one routine which was in the open category. Unfortunately, we had to take an emergency intermission during the show because one of the girls tore her ACL.

Chairman, Ashley Evanchof was awarded overall for the most points with her solo to “Landslide”. The dance was graceful and beautiful including leaps and turns across the stage.

Our first competition was a success. The plan was to travel as a team to Delaware to compete in another competition the next weekend. However, the weather was not in our favor and we were not able to drive through the Nor’easter that hit the east coast.

Unfortunately, that means we only had one competition.

Now we start preparing for our recital that is the second week of April. The whole company will be performing that weekend. It is a great opportunity for choreographers to really show their creativity. It also gives the chance for dancers who did not do the competition to really express themselves on stage.

Come support the Cortland Dance Company at their recital on April 13 or 14 held at  Cortland High School!
