After taking down Oswego State on Saturday with a 4-0 rout in their first SUNYAC game of the season, Cortland’s Men’s Soccer continued their hot start with a 5-0 win over Alfred Univerity on Sunday. The Red Dragons lined up in a 4-3-3 formation as they have all season, and looked confident throughout, as they have all season. This is how the team lined up:
Similar to how Saturday’s affair started, Cortland got off to a quick 2-0 start against Alfred. In the opening quarter of an hour, Cortland had a two-goal lead and were playing as confident as ever. Migell Ormsby opened the scoring in the 7th minute, with a Jake Keller goal following five minutes later. Keller and Ormsby’s goals were the lone first half goals as the Red Dragons went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Cortland’s dominant first half will likely have made everybody involved happy, but one player who will be especially happy with the performance is Junior goalkeeper, Sean Kelly. The 10 men in front of him produced 13 shots, 5 of which were on target, and kept everything away from Kelly. Alfred’s 0 shots in the first half would have Kelly hopeful of recording his sixth shutout of the season and his second of the weekend following his 6-save performance against Oswego on Saturday.
Jake Keller doubled his goal tally with 30 minutes remaining in the second half extending Cortland’s lead to 3-0. This was the Junior’s fourth goal of the weekend, after Saturday’s brace against Oswego State. Keller has now scored in five consecutive games bringing his total to seven on the season to go along with two assists.
Sophomore Jake Kaufman also got on the scoresheet on Sunday giving him his first goal of the season and giving Cortland a 4-0 lead on the night. Unfortunately for Alfred, Cortland were chasing their biggest win of the season and Blake Aronson’s goal in the final decade of minutes of the match gave them that.
Cortland’s nine-goal weekend sets them up nicely as they prepare to take on SUNY Oneonta in a battle of Red Dragons on Friday. Last year, Cortland captured a win against the fellow Red Dragons with Cam LaVallee, Jake Keller, and Migell Ormsby leading the way with goals in a 4-2 win.
