Cortland Softball Cruises Past Fredonia in Game 1

SUNY Cortland Red Dragon’s softball team crushes Fredonia in a SUNYAC matchup on Thursday, April 18th in Cortland, NY.

The pitcher, Sam Van Dorn, started off for the Red Dragons. It was a slow start for both teams, as the 1st inning was three up, three down. It wasn’t until the bottom of the second that the Red Dragons got their rhythm. Cailey Cuttita doubled to right field and was followed by a single by Alyssa Finno to left field. They left two on base with a strikeout to end the inning. Cortland held Fredonia in the third inning and Fredonia did the same in the bottom.

In the top of the fourth inning, Megan Maull cracks one under the second baseman into right field for a single. Eva Fitzsimmons was hit by a pitch and walks to first base, leaving two on with one out. Those two runners move on to second and third after an attempted bunt moves past the catcher. Bases loaded as Cortland walks Cassie Herman of Fredonia. With the bases loaded and one out, Eva Fitzsimmons was out after smashing into Cortland’s shortstop. Red Dragons get the third out with the bases loaded, keeping it a 0-0 game.

In the bottom of the fourth, a walk and a bunt leave two Red Dragons on base. The bases are loaded after Alyssa Finno reached first base after a fielding error and Cortland runs ahead when Tori Scarff slams a single past the shortstop and the Red Dragons lead Fredonia 1-0 with one out. The pitcher Sam Van Dorn drills a ball into left field scoring another run. Kelly O’Gorman came in next to score two more runs after she singles to left as well. The score is 4-0 Cortland with two on and two outs. The bottom of the fourth finally ends after Cortland steamrolls ahead.

The next few innings were slow with no score and only a couple of hits. Fredonia switches pitchers at the bottom of the sixth inning in hopes of slowing down Cortland’s hitting. The final inning went three up and three down to end the game.

Overall the game was a fair and clean game with most of the action happening during the 4th inning, as that is when the Red Dragons began to dominate the game. Before this game, the Cortland Red Dragon Softball team was in second place in the SUNYAC standings, following Geneseo. The SUNYAC Tournament will take place May 2nd-5th, it looks like we will be seeing our Red Dragon Softball team there.
