In a SUNYAC match-up between the two Red Dragon teams, tension was in the air. Cortland being the 1st seed in the championship and Oneonta being the fourth seed, it was supposed to be a good game.
Cady Walts starts the game pitching for the Red Dragons. It only took the Red Dragons Softball team to get up to bat for them to start dominating the game.
With three runs in the bottom of the first, Cortland started their domination. In their second time up to bat, Kelly O’Gorman doubled to center field and Taylor Felicello singled to center directly after advancing O’Gorman home. Cortland’s Hannah Thornhill singles and gets another runner in to advance the score 5-0 at the bottom of the second. Two outs in the bottom of the second, and Oneonta can’t seem to stop Cortland’s offense.
Oneonta changed their pitcher in hopes to keep up with Cortland, but they couldn’t hold them back. A single by Alyssa Finno and an error allowed Cortland to gain another two runs! After a Sabrina Caputo single, Alyssa Finno runs home and the score moves to 8-0. Finally, Oneonta was able to get their third out to end the inning.
The bottom of the third was a bit shorter for the Cortland Red Dragons, but it didn’t stop them from scoring another run. They extended their lead to 9-0 as they headed to the top of the fourth. Things started to look up for the Oneonta Red Dragons when they had two runners on and Lauren Sabatino doubled to bring one run in. Another run was scored with a fly out to right field, with the score now at 9-2 with two outs in the top of the fourth.
Both teams went three up, three down from the fourth through the seventh inning. The Cortland Red Dragon’s cruised past the Oneonta Red Dragons by a score of 9-2 in a SUNYAC game. The New Paltz Hawks and Geneseo Knights play next, and Cortland will move on to play the winner of that game.
