New York is well-known for many things. One of those things happens to be the beauty of the Fall. There are many activities and many places in Central New York that host events surrounding the season. There are a lot of places surrounding the Cortland area. Here are a few popular attractions in the area…
Just a short drive North from Cortland on Route 81 Beak and Skiff Orchards, located in Lafayette is great to visit all Fall long. Guests can enjoy apple picking, wine and cider tasting, great homemade treats and amazing food.
Beak and Skiff offers a picking schedule to know what you’re picking upon arrival. Beak and Skiff is great for a family fun day or a date with your friends or significant other. There is a kids area with a petting zoo and a tasting room for adults. Beak and Skiff covers a huge target market in the area and for travelers alike. I had the pleasure of tasting some amazing wine and pick some Empire Apples just a few weeks ago.
A few miles west of Lafayette, in Marietta, there is Tim’s Pumpkin Patch. I went here this past weekend and was amazed by this Gem located almost in the middle of nowhere. They had a huge plethora of fudge and homemade cookies to choose from. For the pumpkins, you could choose from some already picked which included some specialty pumpkins (like huge white, grey and snowball) or go pick your own. What’s the fun in going to a pumpkin patch and not picking your own pumpkins though? Tim’s also had some local beers and ciders on tap and informed us that they were in the middle stages of brewing their own beer. Perfection takes a long time and they aren’t finished yet but the finished product should be great, they have grown their hops for almost four years. I walked away with some nice looking pumpkins and some amazing fudge.
Abbott farms in Baldwinsville, NY is another great
family friendly place for fall activities. What makes Abbott’s different from other attractions is they offer a Nighttime Corn Maze along with the other fall activities Beak and Skiff offers. They also have U-Pick apples and a cider mill with tastings and a place for children. More on the adult side, there is Critz Farms in Cazenovia, NY. Critz is a farm, cider mill and brewery. Different from Beak and Skiff and Abbott’s, they try and reach the adult demographic of the area. They have tasting events with live music throughout the fall. Although being a brewery and cider mill and trying to reach more of an adult demographic, Critz is still family friendly and hosts a Fall Harvest Celebration every weekend in October.
Even farther up Route 81 at the New York State Fairgrounds, there is a scarier fall experience: Fright Nights at the Fair.
This is a haunted house that includes four different haunted attractions. Guests don’t have to visit all four attractions but it is cheaper that way, only $25 for all four while just one is $10. Something fun and new brought to Fright Nights is the Zombie Paintball Hunt. In lieu of the unpredictable Central New York weather, all attractions are located inside. Someone was thinking ahead.
Heading the opposite way, South, there is the Iron Kettle Farm in Candor, New York. They are “more than just a pumpkin farm.”They have a greenhouse, a small petting zoo, and a huge gift shop. The gift shop is open during the Spring and Fall. A downfall, though, is that guests cannot bring their own pets were at Tim’s and Beak and Skiff you can bring the family. The Iron Kettle allows guests to buy tickets to take part in some of their fall activities like Barnyard ball, a corn maze, and a hayride.
A different activity that shows the beauty of New York is the Adirondack Scenic Railroad fall foliage trip. You board a train to go see the beautiful colors that the New York trees have to offer. Guests can board the train in Utica, New York to travel to Thendara which is located near Old Forge. They have partnered with hotels, lodges and camping resorts in Old Forge to offer deals for guests to stay. This is a more expensive but beautiful option for a fall activity at around $40 a person for the round trip ride.
