Gold Cup Preview

The Gold Cup is coming up this July, starting from the 7th till the 26th, all the games are going to be played in the US, as previous incarnations of the tournament have had games in Mexico or Canada.

What is the tournament for? 

The tournament determines what nation wins a bid to the CONCACAF Cup (winners of this edition against the winners of the 2019 edition) which will determine what nation represents the region in the Confederations Cup to be played in Qatar 2021. The current representative is Mexico having won the 2015 edition and winning the one-game playoff game against the United States, the winner of the 2013 edition.

How do teams qualify?

North America: Mexico, United States and Canada are automatically qualified (Hosts)

Central America: The four best placed teams from the Copa Centroamericana 2017 (with the fifth place team playing a playoff series with the Caribbean), this year out of the usual 7, one was barred from competition play indefinitely by FIFA (Guatemala) due to interference with the government of Guatemala.

Caribbean: The four best placed teams from the Caribbean Cup 2017 are in, the fifth plays the playoff series with the Copa Centroamericana 2017 fifth place team
