ESPN is in a state of wondering why they’re losing viewers and last night was a prime example. We were promised an 11 pm decision from Marvin Bagley III, a prospect that some say would have been the number one pick in this years draft had he been eligible, and what we got was a LLWS story and baseball highlights. I get that you want to tease the decision but don’t drive people away with highlights of the most boring sport right now.
Now to Bagley. I thought he was choosing USC. He’s been working out in LA, he lives in California and it seemed like the logical thing to do. Bagley going to Duke now makes them, for the second year in a row, the preseason favorite to win the National Championship.
Bagley brings to the table a 6-foot-11 frame who can play any front court position, handle the ball and shoot from the perimeter. Coach K loves versatile fours and that is exactly what Bagley is. He also adds to a loaded Duke team, bringing a fourth top 10 recruit this season to the Blue Devils.
Trevon Duval is a game changer the moment he steps on the floor, gives Duke a legitimate point guard and is the number one PG in this years class. Wendell Carter is a go to force in the post as a power forward and was the best power forward in this years class before Bagley reclassified. Gary Trent Jr. was one of the best scorers in high school basketball and was the number one shooting guard in this years class. Grayson Allen will also benefit without having a target on his back and will be able to play the two or the three for a majority of his time on the floor.
The rich just got richer and have leaped every other team in college basketball as the favorite to cut down the nets in April.
