The Cortland Men’s Lacrosse team hosted Nazareth on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, in their second home game of the season. The Red Dragons took care of business and prevailed over the Golden Flyers by a score of 13-7, earning their first victory.
Senior Terrence Haggerty once again led the offensive attack for the Red Dragons, scoring four goals. In the faceoff circle, Junior Brian Williams went 5-for-12. Junior Jon Vargas patrolled the goal for the large majority of the contest, surrendering just five goals and compiling 17 saves and the win. On the other side, Nazareth goalkeeper Eric Almquist did save 15 but the large volume of shots was too much as 13 found the back of the net.
A back-and-forth battle early on saw a 3-2 Nazareth lead after one quarter of play. After allowing an early second quarter goal, the Red Dragons rattled off a 6-0 run, highlighted by two goals from Dante Yacavone and a trio from Haggerty, including a breakaway resulting in a filthy one-on-one goal. A goal by John Lippert of Nazareth with 2:17 balanced the momentum for a few minutes until an electrifying goal scored by Cortland’s Cam LaPorta with just seven seconds left in the half, giving the Red Dragons a 9-5 lead.
Cortland came out on fire in the second half and kept their foot on the gas. Adding four straight goals, the Red Dragons led 13-5 with just over three and a half minutes to play. The Golden Flyers added a pair of late goals in the final minute, getting the score to its final score of 13-7.
The 1-2 Red Dragons will play at Morrisville State on Tuesday (3/12) and at Farmingdale State on Friday (3/15) before heading down to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a pair of contests.
