NFL Week 4 Pick’em

Courtesy of Michael Perez/Associated Press

Week 3 of the NFL produced some of the best football games of the season so far. There were 8 games that were decided by less than 7 points. In terms of betting, it was a difficult week. A lot of teams that were favorites going into the games lost outright. Just an overall wild week of football. Picks with the spread went 5-10 for last week and 17-14 overall.

Bears at Packers

The Bears are coming off of a walk-off win against the Steelers in overtime. The Bears have a very nice tandem at running back in Tarik Cohen and Jordan Howard. If they can manage at least a decent game from Mike Glennon at QB, they have a shot to make games close. The Packers struggled against the now 0-3 Bengals as they needed OT to secure their victory. You can never count out Aaron Rodgers even on off days but he will need to put up more points with his defense not being strong.

Straight – Packers

Spread – Packers (-7)

Saints at Dolphins

The Saints got their first win of the season in Week 3 against the Panthers. The Saints defense showed up even though the Panthers leading receiver was their running back in Christian McCaffrey. The Saints are still not a great football team so do not expect many of those types of wins. The Dolphins definitely got their season hopes setback in a loss against a Jets team many thought wouldn’t get a win. Their offense depends heavily on Jay Ajayi so if he gets shut down, it will be a rough day for Jay Cutler.

Straight – Dolphins

Spread – Dolphins (+3)

Panthers at Patriots

The Patriots defense is definitely a concern at this point with the injury to Dont’a Hightower. They almost lost to an inconsistent Texans team, but Brady once again had a comeback drive to win it. The offense is really beginning to look like it’s clicking. The Panthers didn’t have their top two receiving threats in Greg Olsen and Kelvin Benjamin in last week’s loss to the Saints. Cam Newton has struggled to be consistent since his Super Bowl appearance and his lack of talent doesn’t help.

Straight – Patriots

Spread – Patriots (-9)

Jaguars at Jets

Blake Bortles game last week gives fans a glimpse of what could be in the future. He torched a good Baltimore defense. If he can somewhat play to that level consistently, the Jags can have a chance to win a poor division. The Jets aren’t even sure how to tank right. They beat the Dolphins last week which could hurt their chances for the #1 overall pick in next year’s draft. At least they got one win out of the way and can actually avoid the title of 0-16.

Straight – Jaguars

Spread – Jaguars (-3.5)

Titans at Texans

This is a big divisional game for both teams. If Houston can win it will be a big victory and make both teams 2-2. If the Titans can win it will give them a bigger lead in the division. Deshaun Watson impressed against the Patriots last week which is surprising compared to how other rookies have fared against Belichick. The Titans have probably two of the top twenty running backs in the league on the same depth chart. They prove to be a nice little weapon to help out Marcus Mariota.

Straight – Titans

Spread – Titans (-1.5)

Steelers at Ravens

Both teams are coming off an embarrassing loss for different reasons. The Ravens were blown out in London against the Jags and the Steelers lost to the then-winless Bears in OT. Joe Flacco has been banged up with a bad back this season so him being injured does not help. Their offense doesn’t really have a running game which allows teams to look for the pass. I expect the Steelers to bounce back from their first loss of the year and they really need Le’Veon Bell to return to All-Pro form. The holdout for his contract might’ve actually had an effect on his season so far.

Straight – Steelers

Spread – Steelers (-3)

Bengals at Browns

Battle of the 0-3 teams. The Bengals offense definitely looked better last week against the Packers, but they didn’t have to do much to be better than previous weeks. Their new offensive coordinator got rookie Joe Mixon involved a lot more in the game plan. The Bengals have a good problem to have with three capable running backs. The Browns have shown promise with the young talent surrounding Kizer, but injuries to Corey Coleman and Myles Garrett along with Isaiah Crowell taking a step back in production has not helped the team’s cause.

Straight – Bengals

Spread – Bengals (-3)

Lions at Vikings

Matthew Stafford and the Lions were inches away from staying undefeated and taking the lead in the NFC North division before falling to the Atlanta Falcons last week. Stafford is slowly becoming one of the most clutch players in the league with his 4th quarter comebacks. Case Keenum played the best game of his career last week against the Buccaneers. No shot that he plays like that again if Bradford is out another week. Dalvin Cook is looking like one of the biggest steals of the draft so far.

Straight – Lions

Spread – No line

Rams at Cowboys

The Rams have one of the best offenses in the league up to this point. Todd Gurley has 6 touchdowns through 3 games. Jared Goff is gelling well with new receivers in Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Sammy Watkins. If the Rams can keep this core of offensive players around they could compete with Kurt Warner and the Greatest Show on Turf. The Cowboys looked back to form with Ezekiel Elliot running for more than 8 yards like he did against Denver and Dak Prescott having 3 total touchdowns.

Straight – Cowboys

Spread – Rams (+6.5)

Bills at Falcons

Matty Ice and the Atlanta Falcons undefeated season barely stayed intact in Detroit last week. Despite this, their team has seemed to improve from last year’s team. Vic Beasley being injured obviously hurts the defense, however. They are hoping to make another appearance in the Super Bowl this year. The Bills are now tied for first in the AFC East at 2-1 following a 26-16 win over the Broncos. This would be a big statement game for the Bills if they can win this game.

Straight – Falcons

Spread – Bills (+8)

Eagles at Chargers

The Eagles won in walk-off fashion last week against the Giants. Rookie kicker Jake Elliot kicked a 61-yard field goal to win it. The Eagles are still looking to be one of the teams to beat in the NFC. The Chargers are still looking for their first win but they are definitely one of the best 0-3 teams in the league. Philip Rivers usually keeps the team in games until the final drive or two.

Straight – Eagles

Spread – Eagles (+1.5)

49ers at Cardinals

The 49ers have not had a very impressive start to the season so far, as expected with Brian Hoyer as their starting QB. They lost last week in a close game 41-39. The Niners scoring 39 points is more of a shock after not scoring a TD in the first 2 games. The Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald looked like his younger self last week against the Cowboys with two touchdowns. If Larry keeps up the production, it will definitely help Carson Palmer, in the long run, this season.

Straight – Cardinals

Spread – Cardinals (-7)

Giants at Buccaneers

I expect the Bucs to bounce back from their Week 3 loss to the Case Keenum-led Vikings. I think Jameis Winston and the Bucs are still a top team in the NFC with a very solid defense. I don’t see the Giants getting their first win this week. At this point, I don’t trust Eli Manning in games as he hasn’t looked like Eli of old. It was nice to see a semi-healthy Odell Beckham Jr. emerge last week with 2 TDs.

Straight – Buccaneers

Spread – Buccaneers (-3)

Raiders at Broncos

The Raiders were embarrassed on Sunday by Kirk Cousins and the Redskins. The Redskins defense completely shut down the Raiders offense. The team really needs Amari Cooper to break out of his rut that he is in as he leads the league in dropped passes so far this season. The Broncos offense seems to be a lot better this year than it was last season. Trevor Siemian seems to be way more confident and it shows. He has a lot of strong weapons around him.

Straight – Broncos

Spread – Broncos (-2.5)

Colts at Seahawks

Another game for the Colts without Andrew Luck. Jacoby Brissett did impress last week but it definitely won’t be enough against the Seahawks. Even if the Seahawks are struggling, they are good enough when they are playing 50% to still beat the Colts. Brissett will just get better and better each game/practice that he is with this team. This is an important game for the Seahawks, it should be an easy win and a momentum starter.

Straight – Seahawks

Spread – Colts (+13)

Redskins at Chiefs

These two teams have had some of the best defense in the league so far this year. This will be the first true test for the new deep ball of Alex Smith. The emergence of Kareem Hunt and his big plays have definitely allowed Smith to take more shots than normal. This will be good for the Redskins if they can show that they can play at a high level consistently or if their big wins are just flukes. Also, these games will decide if the Redskins pay Kirk Cousins or not.

Straight – Chiefs

Spread – Redskins (+7)
