Cortland couldn’t protect home field advantage this morning in the first round of the SUNYAC baseball tournament. The #1 seed Cortland Red Dragons fell to the #4 seed Oneonta to the score of 3-2.

Cortland was nationally ranked going into the game, with a record of 29-9-1, and Oneonta was 17-18. This was the second time in team history that Oneonta has beaten Cortland, and the first time since 2010.

Oneonta struck first in the game with a solo home-run in the fourth inning by Dominic Lamonica, but Cortland answered right back in the bottom of the with a two-out RBI by James Varian. The game remained a tie until the 8th inning, where Oneonta put up two runs from throwing an error on a sac bunt attempt, which put a runner on third, and a sac fly.

Cortland tried to answer back in the 8th, with 1 RBI from Scott Giordano’s two-out double. But the rally was not enough to tie the game or take the lead.

Neither team scored in the ninth inning, and Oneonta went on to get the win to advance to the next round of the SUNYAC tournament. For the full box score, go to cortlandreddragons.com.
