Quarterfinal Round in CONCACAF Champions League

So I didn’t go perfect, but I only had three wrong choices. Herediano, Guastatoya, and also Toluca were lackluster in the Round of 16. Guastatoya and Toluca especially as both lost the two legs but Herediano is even worse because they won the first game and then they just shoot themselves in the foot by losing 4-0 to then lose the series 5-3 (Atlanta had the Away Goal tiebreaker had Herediano not let in 2 goals).

So here are this round’s matchups (all times Eastern Time)

Santos Laguna vs New York Red Bulls

Away Leg: @New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Arena, Harrison, NJ, 8pm March 5th

Home Leg: @Santos Laguna, Estadio Corona, Torreón, Coahila, México, 9pm March 12th

Houston Dynamo vs Tigres UANL

Away Leg: @Houston Dynamo, BBVA Compass Stadium, Houston, Texas, 10pm March 5th

Home Leg: @Tigres UANL, Estadio Universitario, San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, México, 11pm March 12th

CAI vs Sporting KC

Home Leg: @CAI, Estadio Agustín Muqita Sánchez, La Chorrera, Panamá, 9pm March 6th

Away Leg: @ Sporting KC, Childrens Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kansas, 8pm March 14th

CF Monterrey vs Atlanta United

Away Leg: @CF Monterrey, Estadio BBVA Bancomer, Guadalupe, Nuevo León, México, 10pm March 6th

Home Leg: @Atlanta United, Mercedes Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia, 8pm March 13th

As for my projections

Santos Laguna vs NY Red Bulls

Here is the thing, Santos Laguna thrashed Marathon which was a Honduran side and the Red Bulls won the series 3-0. Normally when a MLS or Liga MX plays a Caribbean side like what the Red Bulls had to go, the series is normally over in the first leg. The Red Bulls didn’t do that so that makes me believe that Santos will win the series. I was going to say Santos in a small margin but after watching the two legs of them win by at least three goals there is going to be a bigger margin.

Winner: Santos Laguna

Houston Dynamo vs Tigres UANL

Houston is a surprise now since they beat Guastatoya twice even though that they are not in midseason form. Not only that but the fact that they were one of the worst teams in the MLS last season makes me believe that they can make a run towards the championship game but alas, they are facing Tigres. The same Tigres that are leaders in the Liga MX Clausura over teams like Cruz Azul and America (Both will come back to the Champions League) Monterrey and Chivas where all of them are the typical powerhouses. Moreover, in just 30 minutes of the Home Leg Tigres went from a 1-0 deficit in the aggregate to winning it 3-1.

Winner: Tigres UANL

CAI vs Sporting KC

Here we have the matchup that no one was thinking about, CAI from Panama and Sporting KC from the MLS. Why do I say that, mainly because the teams that each played have either won or have gone to the finals in the last decade. In CAI’s case, they won the series in the away leg when they dethroned the second place from last year’s tournament Toronto FC. Meanwhile Sporting KC kicked Toluca’s arse in the opening game as well. So this series is mainly a toss up as both are in a relative high note. The winner of the series will depend on what happens in Panama as CAI can liquidate this series at home and even though Sporting KC is known to be one of the best at Childrens Mercy Park , they can make it almost impossible to be able to make up the difference. Moreover, the notion that this series should be easy for Sporting KC is almost insulting. Just because CAI doesn’t play in the Costa Rican, Liga MX or the Honduran League, there are strong teams in Panama. One of them being Arabe Unido who went to the second round after defeating the Red Bulls.

Winner: CAI, although there could be a result that would propel Sporting KC to the Semifinals

CF Monterrey vs Atlanta United

If Monterrey played like they did against Alianza, then Atlanta would win this series handily. In that series Monterrey failed to make the advantage by not scoring in the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador. Since then, Alianza only had to win it by scoring a goal and that would make that Monterrey would need to score two. Alas, Monterrey made it through barely. Whereas Atlanta lost in Herediano 3-1 and then in their alternative stadium crushed Herediano 4-0. So this would make it that one Mexican team is going down this early.

Winner: Atlanta United
