This weekend the Red Dragons welcomed Fredonia and Buffalo State both SUNYAC match ups. The Red Dragons entered the weekend with a 5-2-3 record. Coming off a two game losing streak the the Re Dragons really needed to at least split the weekend.
Friday afternoon the Red Dragons welcomed Fredonia. Entering the weekend Fredonia had a 6-6 record (2-1) in SUNYAC play. In the 32nd minute Fredonia opened the scoring with a goal by Aleeya Clemons. Cortland needed to bounce back in the second half. At the end of the first half the shots were even at 5 a piece.
The second half was a different story. In the 46th minute the Red Dragons got on the scoreboard with a goal from Junior Vanessa Romero. For Romero, it was her second goal on the season, thus tying the game at 1 a piece. That wouldnt be the last of the scoring for Cortland, as they struck again in the 79th minute with a goal from freshman Erin Valentine. For Valentine it was her second goal of the season. The Red Dragons dominated the second half out shooting Fredonia 14-3, overall 19-8 on the game with 10 of the 19 shots being on goal. Cortland’s defensive efforts helped them fuel their second half comeback and improving their record to 6-2-3 entering Saturday’s game.
Saturday afternoon the Red Dragons welcomed Buffalo State. Entering Saturday Buffalo State had a record of 3-8-1 (0-4) in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons found themselves in an 1 goal deficit as Lindsay Mahoney scored her 6th goal of the season for the Bengals in the 31st minute of play. Cortland entered halftime down 1-0 once again. In the first half the Bengals out shot the Red Dragons 3-2, both teams had 1 save a piece.
Into the second half the Red Dragons found their offense with a goal in the 60th minute by Junior Vanessa Romero her third on the season. Shortly after Romero found the back of the net once again in the 72nd minute for her 4th goal on the season and 2nd of the game, aided with a great assist from freshman Casey Schmitt. The Red Dragons once again played a great second half out shooting the Bengals 12-2 in the half and 14-5 overall with 5 of the 14 shots being on goal. Goalkeeper Abby Miller played a great second half with two saves and not allowing the Bengals to get on the scoreboard in the second half.
At the end of the weekend the Red Dragons improve their record to 7-2-3, (4-2) in SUNYAC play. They will be in action on the road starting Friday October 13th as they take on Geneseo and again on the road Saturday October 14th as they take on Brockport on the road.
