The coronavirus has put baseball in a place nobody knows what to do with, presenting a future that is impossible to predict.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time in 140 years there were no baseball games being played on Memorial Day.
How is baseball going to come back? Is it even going to be possible for everyone to agree on the right plan?
Major league baseball put together a 67-page operations manual outlining the various protective and preventative measures that it would require players and teams to follow in the event of a 2020 season. This plan did not make players happy. The plan included masks in the dugout, no spitting, and socially distanced infielders. How is this going to work?
Players are always misplacing things in the dugout. What if someone else takes another person’s masks that isn’t safe? How are you going to socially distance the infield? Baseball would not be the same.
Players are itching to get back onto the field and start playing again. Let them play! Baseball has gotten us through some of the hardest times in this country. Bringing baseball back will give Americans something to enjoy and take our mind off things. We also have to take into consideration that each player needs to be protected too. The players are concerned not only for their safety but their families. They are just like me and you. They don’t want to contract this virus either, they don’t want to spread the virus. Players want the money they deserve this season and will not back down from this fight.
It will be very interesting to see if the MLB has a 2020 season. How are they going to compete with television time with professional basketball and ice hockey? Basketball is a sport that is impossible to have proper social distancing.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred should carefully look over what the new normal is going to look like. Maybe his plan is really going to work and keep the players safe. But the players want more assurances.
Will we get a 2020 season?
