Wake Forest Radio Announcer Outed As A Mole

(cbssports.com) After Wake Forest’s loss to Louisville on Nov. 12, coach Dave Clawson alleged that Louisville had received impermissible information that benefited the Cardinals on the field. At the time, the pointed allegation seemed to be an indictment of Bobby Petrino’s staff. After an internal investigation, it turns out the mole was in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, all along.

Wake Forest announced Tuesday that it has fired Tommy Elrod, a member of the school’s radio broadcast team, after an investigation revealed the announcer “attempted to provide confidential and proprietary game preparations on multiple occasions, starting in 2014.”

This story is bonkers. I’ve been on the other side of this when the Jets got their practices taped during Spygate and I’ll admit it, I wasn’t all that mad. If you need to spy on the Jets to get a leg up on them then that’s on you. As for this mole, I am not all too happy. Doing this at the pro level is one thing but doing this to college kids is a completely different story. Everyone gets behind the whole “college sports are more fun because these kids aren’t getting paid and have pride to play for, etc.” motto and this guy punches that right in the face. These kids sacrifice a whole lot to play some college ball and I imagine they take a lot of pride in it. Then this guy comes in and decides to chop block all of their work by giving away information to other teams. This guy should never have another job in radio at any level. You want to bash the team all the time? Be my guest. You want to criticize effort by kids? Go for it. You want to screw over your own college athletes? Pack your bags and head on home.

I’ve never even heard of this guy so he’s probably not all that good. Maybe this is a blessing for Wake Forest. Gives them a little bulletin board material considering they’ve won a whopping 12 games since 2014. If I’m a betting man, I’m going all in on the Deacons making the college playoff next year. Take that Tommy Elrod!

P.S.-Do not place anything of monetary value on Wake Forest making the college playoff next season.
